Summer Sports Camps Often Key to Varsity Success

To compete for championships, high school athletes often commit to a summer strength-and-conditioning program, something they learn attending summer sports camps as elementary students. During those camps, they are taught the basic drills, fundamentals, and techniques to succeed. Staff photo by Jennifer Fierro

Sports camps offer more than a few hours away from TV and video games during the dog days of summer.

Elementary-age campers are on the playing field learning the proper ways to hold the ball, run, kick, pass, use equipment, and have a great time while developing a love of sports.

Seventh-graders and older are taught the basics of the varsity playbook for a particular sport with the belief that repetition each season will improve muscle memory and lead to varsity success.

However, you don’t have to be a varsity hopeful to have a great time at these camps. Perhaps the biggest benefit of attending sports camps is players learn to appreciate the intricacies of game tactics as well as get the thrill of being on a playing field with their teammates.

IN MARBLE FALLS

The key to Mustang success has been encouragement, correction, and attention to detail. Expect to see much of the same at the summer camps taught by the Marble Falls High School coaching staff. With a new state-of-the-art second weight room, Marble Falls is showing its commitment to getting the next varsity players ready to compete with the top Class 5A schools in the Austin area.

Marble Falls sports camps are held at Marble Falls High School, 2101 Mustang Drive. To sign up for any of the camps listed here, email Shelby Gordon at sgordon@mfisd.txed.net.

IN LLANO

No school had as much success during the 2017-18 sports year as Llano. The Yellow Jackets made an appearance in the football playoffs, graduate Dakoda Trull won a state powerlifting championship, and four track-and-field athletes competed in seven events at the Class 4A state meet. Why? Because they worked throughout the summer learning how to improve their game.

Most camps at Llano High School will be on the campus at 2509 Texas 16 South. For additional information, email athletic director Matt Green at mgreen@llanoisd.org.
