The Marble Falls LakeFest drag boat races are returning in 2020 on July 25-26. After a two-year hiatus, the quarter-mile race will again test the skills of drivers from the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series who amp up to 260 mph.
The two-day event ends Sunday, July 26, with the final showdowns. Both days begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Take a look back at over two decades of boat races in an article by Daniel Clifton, editor of 101 Fun Things to do in the Highland Lakes magazine. You’ll learn right along with the group of locals who brought the races to town how to prepare for an event this big: The first year the entire town ran out of ice and the beer and ticket admissions ran out of dollar bills.
You can also read about a local youngster who followed in his racing father’s footsteps — or should we say wake — by joining in the 2017 race. Sports enthusiast and reporter Jennifer Fierro tells the story of the then-17-year-old Marble Falls high school senior who worked with his father to renovate a decades-old boat for the races.
You’ll also find the latest information on where to buy tickets and any other special events planned around the two-days of races.
