Castell VFD Barbecue a ‘Family Reunion’ with 900 Pounds of Meat
CASTELL — Castell Volunteer Fire Department president Bill Tuckness has 900 pounds of meat he needs help eating.
The meat — brisket, sausages, chicken, and pork — is part of the department’s 43rd annual barbecue fundraiser, which begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the fire station, 19347 RR 152 West in Castell. Meals are by donation and include all the trimmings.
“It’s our only fundraiser of the year,” Tuckness said. “We’re going to do the cooking ourselves.”
The pit masters will begin their tasks that morning, aiming to fill four 16-foot-by-4-foot pits for the next 12 hours.
The event typically draws 700-900 people because so many use the occasion to socialize with others, Tuckness said.
“I think for the fellowship,” he said. “This barbecue has become like a family reunion for a lot in the Castell area. A lot of people have deep roots. They come for the fellowship and to support the department.”
In addition to the food, Tuckness will play his fiddle while singers Dub Miller and Les Hartman entertain the crowd. Music starts at 5 p.m.
