Inks Lake State Park is hosting its first Highland Lakes Holidays. Campers are invited to decorate their sites in a friendly lighting contest on Dec. 17-18.

“This is definitely the first year we’ve done this, and we’re trying to get more into the Christmas and holiday theme at the park,” said Interpretive Ranger Jamie Verzwyvelt. “We’re encouraging our campers to hang lights around the campsite and decorate them.”

The winning campsite gets a gift card equal to the price of a Texas State Parks pass. Other prizes go to runners-up. Park hosts serve as contest judges.

Verzwyvelt expects campers will begin decorating Friday, Dec. 17, before judges tour the sites on that Saturday and announce a winner.

Everyone is invited to the state park to view the wilderness wonderland. The best night to see the campsites aglow will probably be Dec. 18, Verzwyvelt said.

“We’re excited to see what the campers come up and do,” she added.

Day-use park entrance is $6 for ages 13 and older and free for children 12 and younger. You can purchase an annual Park Pass, which gets the holder and those in the same vehicle with them into any of the 89 Texas State Parks at no additional fee year-round.

For more information on Highland Lakes Holidays or other park activities, visit the Inks Lake State Park website or Facebook page or call Verzwyvelt at 512-793-2223.
