Kids’ Day Out in Burnet is a breath of fresh air

Youngsters can get some facetime with the outdoors — instead of their screens — at the annual Kids’ Day Out on September 21.
The free event is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA of the Highland Lakes at Galloway-Hammond, 1601 U.S. 281 in Burnet.
“It’s free to attend. All we ask is that people bring a canned food item to donate,” said the YMCA’s Erica Melton. “All the food we collect will be donated to a local food bank.”
In the age of constant electronic entertainment, this event is a breath of fresh air for all ages.
“There will be a rock-climbing wall, a fishing pond, outdoor sports,” Melton said. “The day is for kids to have fun, try something they may not have tried before, and just get out and enjoy things.”
Of course, there will be a bounce house or two.
The Burnet fire and police departments will roll in with their vehicles for up-close looks. And, Melton said, a helicopter is flying in for the event.
In the past, organizations also have set up booths to share information about health and fitness.
“There’s lots of goodies and giveaways,” Melton added.
Kids’ Day Out takes place rain or shine. If it rains, organizers will move everything inside the YMCA building.
