Tejas Trails is doing its part to make the Highland Lakes a trail running destination. The race organizer is hosting several local upcoming events, including the Spider Mountain Trail Run and the Texas Trail Running Festival.

The overnight trail run is May 15-16 at Spider Mountain Bike Park, 200 Greenwood Hills Trail in Burnet, while the festival is June 4-6 at Krause Springs, 424 CR 404 in Spicewood. Other trail runs follow in the Highland Lakes. Visit the Tejas Trails events page for dates and how to register. Races fill up quickly.

In the Spider Mountain Trail Run, Tejas Trails organizers have carved out a challenging course up and down Spider Mountain. Choose from a number of distances and timed divisions: 4-mile, 8-mile, 12-mile, 6-hour, 9-hour, and 12-hour. The 12-hour division has a relay option.

The event starts at 6 p.m. with the 12-hour race followed at 7 p.m. by the other races, so runners will be going into the night and early morning on the well-marked trail.

The course is laid out in a 4-mile loop with runners ascending and descending Spider Mountain twice on each loop. Though it’s only 1,400 feet in elevation, Spider Mountain is rugged with a challenging incline.

Those taking part in the 6-hour, 9-hour, and 12-hour events can fortunately use the bike park's chairlift to either get to the top or the bottom. The 6-hour competitors can use the chairlift once, while the 9- and 12-hour runners can use it twice.

The event also features live music and food trucks.

Registration ranges from $55 to $115, depending on the distance. Fees increase starting May 6 or 7, depending on the event, so register now.

A 1-mile youth trail run is $5 for ages 12 and younger. Parents can run alongside their child at no cost.

The Texas Trail Running Festival is June 4-6 at Krause Springs, known for its beautiful swimming hole and man-made and natural springs. The actual trail run takes place at Grelle Recreation Area, 440 CR 412 near Krause Springs. Grelle doesn’t have near the elevation changes as Spider Mountain, but it’s still a fun challenge.

Choose from distances of 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles, 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers. The event also has a youth 1-mile trail run. Heartier runners can attempt the one-day Trifecta Challenge: a morning marathon (26.2 miles), an afternoon 10-kilometer run, and an evening 5K.

Registration is $40-$120, depending on the distance. Entry is $5 for the 1-mile trail run for ages 12 and younger.

All participants can register online.

The festival also has live music, swimming, outdoor movies, food trucks, games, a kids' zone, and more.

Tejas Trails is looking for volunteers for its events. You don't have to be a runner. Visit the Tejas Trails volunteering page for more information.
